Someone recently requested that I write a post about forgiveness, because she was having a hard time forgiving someone. So I thought, “Sure, that couldn’t be so hard to write.”
Well, it was hard. I mean, what am I supposed to say, that you should forgive someone because it’s right? That’s not much of a post, now is it? But maybe it is. Maybe that’s what she needed to hear. Maybe that’s what you need to hear. Maybe someone’s done something to you. Maybe he forsook you. Maybe he left you unloved. Maybe he hurt you beyond his ability to repay. But you should forgive him.
I know what you’re thinking “But why should I forgive him?”. Well, why should you forgive, anyway?
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up His clothes by casting lots. (Luke 23:34 NIV84)
Jesus forgave His enemies, even as they were crucifying Him on the cross. Forgiving is what Jesus did. You were made in the image of Him, so you should do it too. And that’s pretty much it.
